This is what I prepared using the soft stems of thotakuura .I have prepared many times using various other stems of other greens.Only thing you have to notice is the stem should be tender and soft [not hard /mudurugaa vundakudadu] .
Preparation time is 10 mint's and now I am telling for 3- 4 people .It is a side dish for steamed rice and roti .
Ingredients =
- tender stems of any green - 2 cups ,chopped
- toor dal - 1/4 cup
- onion - 1 medium no , washed ,peeled and chopped
- green chilli 3 -4 nos
- curry leaves - 1 string
- mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
- salt
- oil - 2 tsp
- tumeric powder - 1/4 tsp
- fresh coconut - 4 tsp grated
- cilantro - few springs
Method of preparation =
- Wash toor dal for two times in a pressure cooker directly .
- Wash the stems [peechu teesukondi]and drain water completely and rouhly chop them 1/2 inch size
- Pressure cook toor dal along with chopped stems. Add 1/4 cup of water to pressure cook .
- The dal should not be cooked over 2 visils are sufficient .
- Drain the excess water into a bowel , and this water can be used for preparing rasam [ which we have discussed ]
- In a pan / kadai , heat oil add mustard seeds folloded by curry leaves and chopped onion.
- Saute them for few sec's until light golden then add coarsely grounded greenchilli,salt,cilantro paste ans fry for 1 mint and
- Add turmeric powder cooked and drained toor dal and stems mixture and saute well cook for 5 mint's
- Finally add grated coconut , mix well and turn off from heat .
- Make sure not to mushy toor dal and stems .
- You can use channa dal instad of toor dal.
